Todays guest post is written by Sue & Jannat from 18th Ilford Guides about the York Cityscape event

.

On Friday 20 March, we ventured off from Redbridge station to join York Cityscape event. 2 leaders and 8 guides to walk all over York city centre to answer riddles, questions and take part in challenges and games.
As leader, there were already a wide range of challenges to get to this point, and I was also very excited for the trip! We made it to the train with time to spare. Made it to our accommodation and everyone was excited to be in their rooms and settled in for the night.
The next morning, we all were up, had breakfast and were out in time to start the event, going to those stops that were farther out. Then made our way into the town centre where we explored York, with a few key stops along the way. We of course could not resist a stroll down Diagonally, a wander though the markets, and enjoyed some of the historic sites of York, all while answering questions in the right locations to earn points. We walked our legs off and before the end of the day, enjoyed a hot
meal and made our way to the station.
The guides did not sleep a wink, they played games all the way home. We had lots of laughs and fun and everyone wanted to have more time in York.

A write up from one of our guides (Jannat Qadir)
Recently, our group went to York… and somehow turned into a team of slightly confused detectives. Instead of just walking around, we had to stop at different locations and complete challenges. Most of them involved answering questions about places which sounds easy, until you are staring at a building like “What is this and why does it have 300 plaques?”
We were running around reading every sign we cold fine, arguing over answers, and occasionally realising we’d been looking at the wrong thing the whole time! At some points, it felt like a scavenger hut mixed with a quiz and a tiny bit of chaos.
Despite the confusion (and mild panic), we actually worked really well as a team.
We shared ideas, helped each other and somehow managed to get answers even when we had no cluse what was going on at first.
Overall, it was a really fun trip. We explored York, Learnt random facts we’ll probably forget and had a lot of laughs along the way. 10/10 would get confused in a historic city again!

Girls take what they do in guiding with them as they grow up. Everything from working in a team, to taking the lead, to speaking out on issues they care about. It helps them develop the skills and confidence to become the young women they want to be. ’
